Guitarist/composer Twan van Gerven (1969) began his career as a band leader, composer and guitar virtuoso of the cross-over funk band 'The Tree Funk Concept'. The by van Gerven written pieces for this formation was the starting point for his first work for chamber orchestra 'The King of Sushi'.
Van Gerven earned fame as a guitarist in the band 'BEEF!', awarded with a Silver Harp in 2002 and named 'Best Guitarist of the Netherlands' by winning 'het Duiveltje' in 2004. The compositions of van Gerven covers a vast musical area; from classical work for two instruments to composed jazz fusion for small and large bands, from chamber music to symphony.
On 19 June 2005, the symphony 'The Woensel West Side Story' premiered at the TU Eindhoven, conducted by the Helikon Orchestra under the direction of Kian Pin Hiu.
On August 8, 2006, the first concert of 'Smokey the Bandit and his one night stand band' took place in 'Theater aan de Parade' in 's Hertogenbosch. This concert, performed by several artists (Special Request Horns, U-Gene, Sven Happel and Maarten Poirters), continued in 2009, when the concert hall 'Pul' in Uden offered a stage for a live registration of a dozen performances.
Later that year van Gerven plays the support of Scott Henderson's blues band twice with his trio at the SJU stage in Utrecht and in the Boerderij in Zoetermeer.
The 'VOF Nederland' and 'While You Were Havin'Fun' shows had their first play on March 12, 2011, when an amateur company, on the occasion led by conductor Ed Spanjaard, gave a living room concert somewhere on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam.
In that same year, van Gerven produces JAH6's hitsingle, 'Zij Gelooft In Mij', which gives the band a record deal offered by Kees de Koning of TopNotch. Van Gerven's experience of producing has now been gained through own production, album production of pEp 'Broek Uit!' and working with Bitty Mclean (UB40), Michel Schoots (Racoon), Dave Robinson (Stiff Label & Virgin Records) and Joost Jellema (a.o. Kenny B.) but also by the many studio work for other artists.
Since 2012, van Gerven is back on tour with BEEF, after a sabbatical in 2009, and plays now as guitarist in various theater productions of, amongst others, Tigre Blanco, Denvis and several projects of the Parktheater Eindhoven. He is also a popular session-musician and has been incorporated since 2013 in the session collective of Jam De La Creme from The Hague for festivals (Oerol, Sziget) and club tours in The Netherlands.
As from 2014, Twan van Gerven releases his own work through Home Made Records. The albums Junk Dilemma (2014) and Dutch X-Ing (2015) receives promising reviews in Music Maker and Gitarist and nominates van Gerven in the category of best pop/rock guitarist Benelux and best jazz/fusion/world guitarist Benelux in the polls of the monthly magazine Gitarist. In 2020 the new album "How U Gonna Stroke Yer Solo" has been released.
